Why build the ultimate luxury ski chalet? From the owner of Chalet Sapphire

11 May 2018

Having travelled the world, staying in some of the finest luxury ski chalets, the owner of Chalet Sapphire noticed one thing. Every single one of them came with a compromise. Whether that be the layout, facilities, location, or the logistics; nothing was truly built for purpose. And so came about the vision for Chalet Sapphire. A quest to build the ultimate luxury ski chalet. A property never conceived as a second home, but rather built from the ground up for one purpose; to be the most exceptional mountain residence, a haven for luxurious ski holidays in winter and incredible retreats come summer. We talked to the owner to find out the real story behind this incredible new ski chalet.

The Inspiration - Why build Chalet Sapphire?

Chalet Sapphire is a result of being lucky enough to stay in and enjoy some of the best catered ski chalets around Europe for many years with my friends and family but noticing on every holiday, and in every chalet, there was always a massive compromise involved. Each chalet experience was unique with it’s own merits, but all came with their own challenges; whether that be in terms of the location, the way it was run day to day, the internal and external layout, or the facilities the chalet was able to offer.

Why are all chalets 'a compromise'?

I think the main reason for this is that nearly all these luxury chalets were lovingly designed and built for their owner’s holidays or main home, and converted for the luxury travel industry afterwards. They were doing the best they could with what they already had.  But re-purposing a luxury chalet comes with many compromises, in areas not normally affecting a home. For example, the lack of a truly professional kitchen or laundry facilities, or having separate sitting and entertainment areas. What was needed was a luxury residence similar to a 5* star hotel that offered you your own private and cosy hideaway from it all. Guests were experiencing only small glimpses of that. I wanted guests to have it all.

I wanted to build a luxury chalet truly fit for purpose

Taking all the good points and experiences we had from our luxury ski holidays,  and my own personal ambition to build a ski chalet that truly ticked ALL the boxes,  I spent over 5 years looking for the perfect location.

Why Morzine?

I have to be honest Morzine was not my first choice. Meribel, Switzerland and Val D’Isere are  always the first places people think of when you mention or hunt for luxury ski chalets.

But when you really do your investigations, when you ask yourself what do individuals and families really want from their ski holiday and chalet experience, then the choice of location is not as clearcut.

Morzine has one of the largest ski areas available in the world. It is just over an hour away from the well connected Geneva International Airport. The town itself is full of normal and boutique shops, with a vast array of good restaurants and bars which offer far better value for money than elsewhere.

I was then surprised to find it has the most enviable snow record, with multiple inter-connected resorts covering Switzerland and France and a unique snow-making microclimate as a result of the winds across Lake Geneva. In terms of pistes, every type of skier is catered for, from tree-lined Les Gets, high altitude Avoriaz, and infinite off-piste giving every ski opportunity whatever conditions may bring.

The perfect location

My mind was finally made up when I was offered a piece of land. It has one of the best views I have ever experienced and is one of the most peaceful locations possible in Morzine whist also offering guests a quick flat walk into town. The perfect accessible mountain hideaway. It was the perfect place.

The design team

We are in the process of slowly releasing our design vision for the space although the spec of the chalet has already been released to the public. Our design team are all local from the area, from our architect to the interior designer team and have already created some internationally award winning mountain spaces. They have come up with a totally different concept, of using the different views from the different aspects of the chalet to determine the design of the chalet itself.

This, along with our build for purpose attitude, makes Sapphire totally unique and different. Everything has been done with the client in mind.
